About Raye

By Georgia Williams

RAYE. Rachel Keen. One of the most extraordinary stories in modern British pop. Born in 97 to a Ghanaian-Swiss mother and English father, grew up in Tooting, south London. Writin' songs from 14. Signed a publishin' deal at 17, writin' hits for Beyoncé, Little Mix, John Legend. But for years, the music she wanted to release was held hostage by a major label that refused to let her put out a debut album. Her story is creative imprisonment, legal warfare, and eventual spectacular liberation. It's a mad story, but she came out on top.

Signed to Polydor for over seven years — Friends with Jess Glynne, You Don't Know Me with Jax Jones, Secrets. But the label kept rejectin' her album, demandin' more singles, more collaborations, more radio-friendly fare. In 2021, she published an open letter on Twitter, beggin' the label to release her from her contract. A raw desperate plea. Polydor eventually relented. She went independent.

The results were staggerin'. Self-released on her own label in February 2023, My 21st Century Blues was the sound of an artist finally uncaged. Escapism with 070 Shake became a global phenomenon. Built around a hypnotic drum-and-bass-tinged beat and RAYE's half-sung half-rapped verses about drownin' heartbreak in hedonism. Number one in the UK. Broke into the US Top 40. Visceral, raw, utterly unlike anythin' else on the radio.

At the 2024 Brit Awards, she made history. Six awards in a single night — a record. Best Album, Best Artist, Best Song for Escapism, Best New Artist (the irony). Her acceptance speeches were powerful meditations on creative freedom and independent artistry. A Mercury Prize nomination. Hard Out Here, Worth It — vulnerable balladeer to fierce pop powerhouse.

RAYE's legacy is already secure. The emblem of an era where artists refuse to be silenced by the major label machine. Genre-fluid — pop, R&B, jazz, drum and bass. And she gave hope to countless young musicians trapped in exploitative deals. Proved that liberation is possible, and when the cage door finally opens, the music that comes out can change everythin'.
