About Radiohead

By Mark Williams

When Radiohead released 'Creep' in 92, few could've predicted that the same five men from Abingdon, Oxfordshire would become one of the most audaciously innovative and influential bands in modern music. Creep was a beguilin' awkward anthem of outsider self-loathin' that became an unlikely global hit. But it also became a trap — one Radiohead spent the rest of their career escapin'.

Pablo Honey (93) was uneven, pegged as grunge-lite curiosity in the shadow of American rock. But The Bends (95) marked a startlin' transformation. Fake Plastic Trees, High and Dry, Street Spirit (Fade Out) — a band of extraordinary emotional depth and musical sophistication. Thom Yorke's quaverin' falsetto, Jonny Greenwood's angular guitar, a rhythm section of remarkable precision. Unmistakably British and deeply affectin'. I remember listenin' to The Bends on repeat in my car after a long shift. Just sat there, not movin'.

Then OK Computer (97). An album that didn't just define the late 90s — it defined a new template for what rock music could be. Dense, paranoid, achingly beautiful. Addressed modern alienation, technology, and consumerism with a lyrical and sonic ambition rarely seen. Paranoid Android, Karma Police, No Surprises — instant classics. But the album worked as a whole — a cohesive unnervin' journey through the anxieties of contemporary life. Grammy for Best Alternative Album. Frequently named among the greatest records of all time.

If OK Computer was the peak, Kid A (2000) was the deliberate dismantlin' of those powers and rebuildin' of somethin' entirely new. Eschewin' guitars for synthesisers, electronic beats, orchestral arrangements. A radical departure that baffled many on release but has since been recognised as visionary. Everything in Its Right Place, Idioteque, The National Anthem — pushed rock music into conversation with electronica, jazz, and contemporary classical.

Subsequent albums — Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief, In Rainbows (famously pay-what-you-want in 2007), The King of Limbs, A Moon Shaped Pool — each found new corners of their musical universe to explore. Never repeated themselves. In a culture that often demands consistency, Radiohead's willingness to evolve, frustrate, and challenge their audience is precisely what makes 'em so revered.

In British music history, Radiohead are the difficult geniuses. The band that proved commercial success and artistic integrity need not be mutually exclusive, provided you have the nerve to keep movin' forward. Their influence stretches across every corner of alternative music. One of the most important British bands of all time — beyond dispute.
