About Pink Floyd
By Robert Williams
Pink Floyd. I remember the first time I heard Dark Side of the Moon — I was maybe fourteen, and my mate's older brother had it on vinyl. Put the headphones on, lights off, and it changed how I thought about music. It wasn't just songs; it was a journey. And Pink Floyd built their career on journeys.
They emerged from the London underground scene in the mid-60s as a psychedelic enigma under the visionary but troubled Syd Barrett — songs like Arnold Layne and See Emily Play, shimmerin' eccentric pop gems with Barrett's childlike lyricism. But Syd's mental state, exacerbated by heavy LSD use, forced him out in 68. Could've been the end. Instead, David Gilmour stepped in, and alongside Roger Waters, Rick Wright, and Nick Mason, they charted a new course — expansive atmospheric soundscapes. Meddle in 71 with Echoes showed a band operatin' on its own terms.
Then came Dark Side of the Moon in 73. A phenomenon. Conceptually unified around the pressures of modern life — money, time, conflict, madness. A masterwork of studio production with tape loops, synthesized effects, and Clare Torry's hauntin' vocal on The Great Gig in the Sky. Nine hundred and seventeen weeks on the Billboard 200 — a record that stands to this day. I've got the original pressing. The cover with the prism. Everyone knows it.
Wish You Were Here in 75 — a poignant tribute to Syd's absence. The title track, Shine On You Crazy Diamond — you can feel the love and loss in every note. Animals in 77. And then The Wall in 79 — a rock opera about isolation and authoritarianism. Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) became an anthem. The elaborate stage show redefined what a live concert could be. The film adaptation extended its cultural reach.
Pink Floyd occupy a singular position. The art-school band that became a global juggernaut without ever fully abandonin' their experimental instincts. Influence across progressive rock, ambient music, countless film scores. Yes, the later years saw bitter acrimony between Waters and Gilmour. But the legacy remains untouchable. From Syd Barrett's lysergic Cambridge to the cavernous stadiums of the world — one of British music's most extraordinary stories.
