About Fleetwood Mac
By Robert Williams
Fleetwood Mac — now there's a story. Often thought of as Anglo-American, especially after Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined. But born in London in 67 as a dedicated British blues outfit. Guitarist Peter Green, drummer Mick Fleetwood, and bassist John McVie founded it after Green replaced Eric Clapton in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Their early sound was raw, authentic, steeped in the Chicago blues tradition. I've got the Peter Green era stuff on vinyl — Albatross, that dreamy atmospheric instrumental in 68, became their first UK number one. Black Magic Woman later became a hit for Santana. Man of the World, Oh Well — showin' a band pushin' beyond blues into experimental territory.
Peter Green's escalatin' mental health struggles led to his departure in 70. The band entered a period of flux — Danny Kirwan, Christine McVie, Bob Welch, Bob Weston all passin' through. A sad time for a great talent lost.
Then 75. Based in California, they recruited American duo Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. The album Fleetwood Mac produced three US Top 20 singles — Rhiannon, Landslide. New lease of life. But nothin' prepared anyone for what came next.
Rumours in 77. One of the definin' albums of the 20th century. Recorded amid the spectacular collapse of every personal relationship in the band — Buckingham and Nicks separatin', McVies divorcin', Fleetwood dealin' with his own marital breakdown — they turned dysfunction into art. Go Your Own Way, Dreams, Don't Stop, The Chain, You Make Lovin' Fun. Song after song from the crucible of heartbreak. Thirty-one weeks at number one in the US. Grammy for Album of the Year. Over 40 million copies sold worldwide. And it's not even swears or anythin' — just pure emotional truth.
Tango in the Night in 87 gave 'em Everywhere and Little Lies. The 1997 live reunion The Dance introduced their catalogue to a new generation.
Though their most celebrated era features two Americans, Fleetwood Mac's British roots are undeniable. Formed in London by British musicians. Their blues foundation, their endurance in UK culture — it's all woven into the fabric of British music. From smoky London clubs to stadiums worldwide. Resilience, reinvention, and the transformative power of great songwritin'.
